David Byrne, the former Talking Heads frontman, had issued an apology letter for wearing brownface and blackface in a promotional video the band’s iconic concert film “Stop Making Sense”.

In this video, Byrne was interviewing himself in a split-screen scene, portraying different reporters, Byrne addressed this matter through tweets on Tuesday. He tweeted, to watch me in the various characters, including black and brown face, I acknowledge it was a major mistake in judgment that showed a lack of real understanding.

“Seeing someone else you’re not, the person you thought you were, It’s similar like looking in a mirror.”

Byrne also mentioned:

“I was grateful that a journalist unearthed the clip, and that I hope the past can be examined with honesty and accountability.”

Byrne said at the time he had written to Monae: “How she would feel about a white man of a certain age taking on the song.” She said she was moved by giving him her blessing, that he reached out and asked if he could include the song in his show.

Byrne is among the multiple celebrities forced to grapple with similar old videos resurfacing.
