The sum of 3.5 million dollars, which amounts to about Three Billion, Five Hundred and Thirty-four Million naira (3,534,000,000), has been approved by the president, Muhammad Buhari, for the evacuation of Nigeria who a displaced in various countries surrounding Ukraine, such as Romania, Hungary, and Poland. This news was announced by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Zubairu Dada alongside the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Sadiya Umar Farouk.
Dada said that Air Peace and Max Air airlines have been contracted to provide three aircraft and run as many shifts as possible.
This announcement is coming about a week after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia; an invasion that caused many, citizens and non-citizens alike, to flee Ukraine. Now, it’s a good thing that the Nigerian government has FINALLY arranged for the evacuation of its citizens (better late than never, I guess), but there’s another big question: is the budgeted amount for this sum reasonable?
Some social media users are strongly of the opinion that the budgeted some is ridiculously much, while implying that this just another avenue for Nigeria’s money to be siphoned.
(In times like this, we are sadly reminded that our great nation does not have an airline.) We hope the displaced Nigerians get all the help they need.
